Andrea Allen

Andrea Allen's work explores ideas about our experience of the landscape, capturing the transient moments of life, recording the everyday as if seen through the eye of a lens. Following her last collection about the beach, Andrea Allen reflects on her family's move from London to the Oxfordshire countryside and focuses on how she's observed the landscape that inspired her to paint again, after a gap of more than 20 years. Continuing with Motherhood as a theme, she expresses a desire for the simplicity and innocence of childhood, etching together the defining influence both experiences have over our lives. Andrea makes her work by firstly creating a palette of painted newspaper to use as collage. She works from memory to build the composition in an abstract way, upon which the painted figures are overlaid as cut outs, using drawings and photographs as templates she illustrates how we contrast with our surroundings whilst telling stories of ordinary adventures. The simplicity of the subject gives Andrea's work a charming appeal and evokes those memories and feelings of nostalgia inbuilt in all of us.
