Buster Knightly, artist, original artworks are available online ad in our art gallery at Wychwood Art. A Norwich School of Art student in the late 70s, the choice of graphic design as a route through life seemed like the most commercially sound choice at the time. And it probably was. But I often wandered around the chaotic and exotic fine art studios across the road with an air of jealousy. Now based in the rural landscape of the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire borders, in recent years I have returned to painting with more frequency. I’ve been attracted to the very many possibilities offered by the huge variety that the British landscape provides, from the Scottish coastal and island scenes to the Yorkshire Dales, the South West and the Cotswolds. There’s nowhere else quite like Britain for seasons, weather, skies and topography. I enjoy the immediacy of watercolours - I like to work quickly and this medium provides the perfect platform and a genuine challenge. But lately, I've been experimenting with various oil painting mediums that allow me to work with the same fluidity and energy, using rags and big brushes to push paint around. When it comes to art, there’s no doubt in my mind that the human eye is hugely drawn to contrast. That can mean contrasting colour, light or composition…they’re all equally attractive. And nothing offers contrast quite like our skies. I take every opportunity to be gazing skyward, I thoroughly recommend you try it too! You’ll be as amazed as I am at what’s up there. Even the ‘greyest’ of days has a full palette of hues to show off.
