Graduated from the School of Drawing and Painting, Edinburgh College of Art in 1970. Tutors included William Gillies, Robin Philipson, John Houston and Elizabeth Blackadder. Teacher of Art and Design from 1971. Principal Teacher of Art in Kelso High School from 1978 until retirement in 2008. Became a Professional Member of Visual Arts Scotland in 2006. I live and paint in the Scottish Borders village of Yetholm and my paintings relate mostly to the local landscape from our home in the Bowmont Valley to the Northumberland coast. Changing light and the effect of weather on the atmosphere and mood of my subjects are of great interest to me. In my work I use a water based underpainting then work and rework the surface with glazes of colour until the image becomes established. This can often take weeks to achieve but strangely it is occasionally immediate.
