Artist Spotlight - Sophia Chalklen

What inspires you?

I have a deep connection with nature and its therapeutic powers. I love going on long walks in the woods and I am inspired by the light streaming through the trees and hitting the leaves. I often like to use gold leaf in my work to reflect the image of the golden sunlight shining.

What do you enjoy the most about being an artist?

The satisfaction of a challenging piece well done is very rewarding, but mostly when a client has a connection to my artwork and the joy it continues to bring.

You had a terrible time during Covid and you were quite ill. Did the impact of your illness influence your art?

Yes, the pain and not being able to walk for so long took a toll on my mental health. My father also became very seriously ill at this time. It really helped me to imagine walking through nature and drawing on its healing powers. Since I could not walk in nature, like everyone else, I conveyed it through my art.

Your works feel almost spiritual. Is there a spiritual side to the works as well as the natural beauty?

There is definitely a spiritual and ethereal element to much of my art. I am not religious, but sometimes reality is not always easy and the thought of something beautiful and magical gives me a sense of peace and happiness.
