Tom Sullam. “Dar”. This image is a multiple exposure, involving 4 separate photographs shot on top of each other. The ladies walking along the beach are collecting and selling shellfish. The vertical lines are from the adjacent building to the beach, built in the 1940s and maintaining its retro style. Things in Tanzania have not changed much in the last 80 years, and this image combines architecture and day to day life to reflect this.

A protegé of the internationally renowned Hasselblad Master Charlie Waite, Tom began his professional career as a photographer in 2005, and quickly developed his own signature landscape style. He won the prestigious Fuji Photographer of the year award in 2006, along with the One Vision Prize in 2007. The work shown here at Wytchwood was largely inspired by Tom’s move to Tanzania in 2013. The enormity and sheer breadth of photographic opportunities, combined with the colours, textures, sounds and smells of this East African country proved too much to capture in a single image. Instead, Tom used a combination of multiple exposure and layering techniques to capture his experiences on one single print.
