Holkham Sea Holly is a limited edition linocut landscape print by Sarah Weston. This beautiful print depicts the sea holly found amongst the sand and grasses at Holkham beach on the North Norfolk coast. Inspiration for this print came from the striking contrast between the subtle colours of the spiny white-veined leaves and the striking thistle-like flower heads. This is printed in six layers of colour and is a small edition of 8 prints, all of which are printed by hand so subtle variations occur between them. Each print is numbered, titled and signed at the bottom. Following careers in graphic design and teaching, Sarah now works as a printmaker. She has always loved vibrant illustrations and bold use of colour, and since discovering relief printmaking Sarah has developed her own illustrative style and enjoys creating contemporary linocuts. All her designs are handmade, limited edition prints and each one gradually evolves from initial sketches, to meticulously carving lino and then finally seeing the image appear on paper with each layer of colour. Most of her prints are created using the ‘reduction’ method which enables a multi-coloured print to be produced layer by layer from one block. Much of Sarah’s inspiration comes from colours, shapes and patterns found in nature and each print is designed to capture different aspects of our countryside and coast.
