San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the islands of Venice, northern Italy, lying east of the Giudecca and south of the main island group. The island, or more specifically its Palladian church, is an important landmark. It has been much painted, featuring for example in a series by Monet.

The San Giorgio Monastery was established in 982 but is now best known for the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Palladio and begun in 1566. The belltower has a ring of 9 bells in C#.

Venice is famous for the damp mist that regularly descends over the city to muffle sounds, soften edges, bleed colours and wrap the ancient palaces in an extra blanket of mystery, as depicted here in this sugar-lift etching by Tim Southall

This print is an etching and aquatint drawn on a copper plate. It is printed on Somerset Velvet, an off-white heavyweight 300 gsm handmade paper from St Cuthbert’s Mill in Somerset. The print is in a limited edition of 75 and is signed and numbered by the artist. The image size is 10 x 15 cm on a paper size is 20 x 25 cm.

Size: H:20 cm x W:30 cm

Tim Southall studied Fine Art at Northumbria University and then printmaking Royal College of Art and l’école des beaux art, Paris. Based in London for twenty years, he now splits his time between London and his house and studio in Cadiz Province, southern Spain. The base upon which he builds his work is metaphysics: existence, objects and their properties, space and time, cause and effect, and possibility. Using these guides, he express's how he see's and experiences the world. This he does mostly through the use of narrative within a landscape using either the human or animal form to create a narrative. He strives to make work which is delicate and shows a lightness of touch along with an eye for detail. He also uses the language of drawing and mark-making in an attempt to describe emotional depth and atmosphere.
