Rising to the Sun is an original painting by Amy Devlin. My process starts with taking the photographs I work from, I like to experiment with angles and light in the photographing. Every inch of the canvas has multiple layers on to build up the feeling of light, water and body, every layer focusing in on more detail until there is a balance of tight detail and watery fluidity. This painting was focusing on the reflections of light on the body and the tranquility of the water as she rises to the surface, trying to capture the physical memory of the warmth of sun on your skin under water.
Born and raised in New Zealand, Amy Devlin has lived in the UK for 20 years, first in London, then since 2015 in rural Kent.
Amy’s current body of work focuses on bodies in water and bodies of water. “I love the exploration, chasing the physical memory of being underwater. That tranquil feeling of the sun on your body even through the water.

Paint has always been my favourite medium, and I feel very lucky to be able to do something I truly enjoy. I love the detail in life – a person, an animal, a shaft of light through water, the ever changing clouds. Working in oils I try to recreate a physical memory of water, sunshine and light. I aim to capture the solitude and tranquillity of water or skies by combining realism with impressionistic brushstrokes. Working from your photographs, I can produce high quality paintings of people or pets. For underwater commissions I am able to organise rental of an underwater camera to take on holiday with you to capture amazing underwater images. These unique pieces are a great gift idea or the perfect way to bring a memory to life.
