I’m frequently drawn to the idea that rocks hold our history, and we have only to discover how to unlock their secrets. While working on my coastal paintings I was reminded of the preciousness of rocks and made a short series of paintings on the theme of “Protected Rock”. These culminated in this piece, in which I used structural line drawing to enclose the rock and to present different perceptions, simultaneously creating a dialogue in which “space snaps shut to plane, plane flickers back into open space.
The journey around the canvas gives us colours and stripes, evocative of happy memories on seaside holidays, which serve to act as a foil to the ruggedness of the natural forms and also give reference to the whole process of precipitation. In the bottom left corner the repeating squares allude to the passage of time. Billion year old carbon.
