Colin Allbrook Autumn Dartmoor
Oil Paint on Board
Board Size: 31 cm x 41 cm x 0.5 cm
An Original Oil painting by Colin Allbrook “Autumn Dartmoor” is painted on a gesso coated board. The image size is 31cm x 41cm and framed the dimensions are 44.5cm x 55cm.
Living equi-distant between Exmoor and Dartmoor I often visit both locations to paint. Exmoor is smaller and less wild than the larger, more rugged hills and tors of Dartmoor but both have herds of ponies running free on the moor. The Exmoor herds are protected and monitored to ensure the purity of the breed and their thick coats range in colour from a rich ochre russet to almost black. On Dartmoor however there is a lot more variation in both colour and type of pony, some being pure white while others are tri coloured or dark brown or black. I like to include them in my landscapes as their presence gives some scale and animates the scene. The grassland that covers much of the moor turns a rich ochre in the afternoon sun and this contrasts with the blue tones of the distant tors. The ponies roam the hills grazing and are often found by these upland pools that dot the landscape where the cool breeze ripples the grass and stirs the tails and manes of the animals.
