Devon Garden is an Original Painting by Rosemary Farrer. The bright colours and expressionist nature of this work make it a statement piece.
I begin by spending a lot of time drawing, outside in the case of landscapes, absorbing the atmosphere of a place, studying the forms and really understanding how the light falls. Back in the studio I will start to build up layers of transparent colours in a fairly abstract way, before starting to resolve the image with more opaque paint. This painting was inspired by a sheltered, semi tropical garden in Devon on a very sunny day in August, The light coming through the leaves was scintillating and the colours, though not literal, express that effect.
Rosemary paints in acrylics and oils and also makes original prints. Her most recent work is a group of landscapes celebrating colour and light. I love my daily walks and the beauty of the natural world. Its exciting to see something amazing, then have the challenge to create, not a literal copy, but the feeling that it inspired, the buzz.
Rosemary paints in oils and also makes original prints. The prints are in no way copies of the paintings, they are conceived of, and made, as a response to the special and wonderful effects that can be achieved only through the various techniques of printmaking, whether it be the graphic, dynamic marks of a linocut, or the subtle tones and textures achievable in aquatint and etching. Design, composition and the use of colour are what excite her. She spends a lot of time drawing and painting outside, back in the studio, she will distil these ideas into strong graphic woodcuts, and linos or subtly textured etchings. Recent monotypes draw together the threads of her different media, with their graphic shapes and rich painterly colours. She studied fine art at Camberwell School of Art and The Ruskin School of Drawing, and learned printmaking at Morley College [London]. She has exhibited prints and paintings at many galleries both in Britain and Europe, as well as, several times, at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
