Focality, from the series Spatial history, was painted earlier in 2016 whilst the Artist was re focusing on the central point and meaning of her practice as an artist. In the series Spatial history, Parr revisits places and journeys that are often defined by emotion. Tensions between past and present, joy and saudade, presence and absence continue to inhabit her visual language, expressed through a set of coded references and metaphors, whist she explores the balance of spontaneity and considered control during the painting process. Parr uses pallet knife, brush and sponge building up layers of paint and charcoal and washing away in a process that becomes as important to remove as to add, a reverberation of relationship with the canvas of addition and subtraction, push and pull. The Artist intends to create something that is ambiguous, chimerical, organic and elemental. Signed and dated on the side of the canvas the painting is ready to hang. The canvas is deep edged 4.4cm which shows small signs of the working process to the canvas sides.
