Rio Celeste – Costa Rica

Janette George primarily paints landscapes and seascapes. She finds she is drawn to expressing places she has visited where light and colour interact to provide beauty – wide expansive skies, the hues of nature, reflections in water, textures and layers. Janette loves how colour can be built up and blended from its constituents.
Working initially with acrylic paint with a lot of water, she lets the paint move and disperse to give the effects achieved in the sky, sea and land. Janette then uses her oils to complete the painting, enabling her to create the depth and levels of colour, constantly blending and mixing the paint to produce the hue and texture needed.
This painting was inspired by the almost unreal colour of the Rio Celeste, found in the Tenorio Volcanic area of Costa Rica. The river that cascades down between the rainforest is the most amazing blue / green due to natural minerals bubbling up through the volcanic rocks and when the sunlight catches it, it glows against the deep greens of the rainforest.

I often start with acrylics working on a very wet canvas to provide the under layer and then work on top with oils, which enables me to create the depth and levels of colour, constantly blending and mixing the paint to produce the hue and texture needed.
