In this painting, 'The Magpie’ Lee Tiller has used a summery palette of colours, ranging from rich greens and violets to bright yellow greens and cobalt blues, and in the haystack the shadows contain a variety of warm purples and russets. He paints in the same tradition as the original impressionists, painting an immediacy that recreates the sensation of experiencing a moment in time. Hidden with the brushstrokes are myriad colours that often surprise and confound, yet viewed as a whole, form a harmonious effect similar to musical expression. Having developed a reputation for painting the effects of light, Lee’s work has often been mentioned alongside the works of the original French Impressionists, employing broken colour to create beautiful chromatic harmonies. Like Monet and Pissarro, Tiller reveals as much with colour within the shadows as you would expect to find in the full radiance of reflected sunlight. "The Magpie" will make a wonderful and calming centre piece for any living space or office. Viewers will immediately recognise the motif of the grainstack from Monet's work, and in this painting Lee has incorporated a solitary Magpie as a wink towards this great master impressionist. See if you can find him.
