Acrylic Paint on Canvas Board

Maples is an original acrylic painting on canvas board by Rosemary Farrer. I begin by spending a lot of time drawing, outside in the case of landscapes, absorbing the atmosphere of a place, studying the forms and really understanding how the light falls. Back in the studio I will start to build up layers of transparent colours in a fairly abstract way, before starting to resolve the image with more opaque paint. The inspiration for this series of paintings was a walk in a local Arboretum, I turned a corner and was blown away by the sunlight slanting through a group of red and orange Japanese Maples. This painting its all about that light and dazzling colour.
Rosemary paints in acrylics and oils and also makes original prints. Her most recent work is a group of landscapes celebrating colour and light. ‘I love my daily walks and the beauty of the natural world. Its exciting to see something amazing, then have the challenge to create, not a literal copy, but the feeling that it inspired, the buzz.’
The prints are in no way copies of the paintings, they are conceived of, and made, as a response to the special and wonderful effects that can be achieved only through the various techniques of printmaking. She spends a lot of time drawing and painting outside, back in the studio, she will distil these ideas into strong graphic woodcuts, linocuts and monotypes. She studied fine art at Camberwell School of Art and The Ruskin School of Drawing. She has exhibited prints and paintings at many galleries both in Britain and Europe, as well as, several times, at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
