Marie Robinson’s The Gift is an original still life painting of a small vase of pink clematis flowers with a postcard of a Camille Pissarro drawing of a peasant girl. An arrangement which came about by chance, after finding the clematis flowers and realising they fitted well with this favourite postcard to create a narrative.
The Gift is painted in oils on an canvas board and is framed in a white painted wood frame.

I have a continuing engagement with thematic collections and am inspired by the history and associations inherent in ordinary objects and materials. My subjects are commonplace items particularly from the domestic environment. I am interested in the arrangement, combination and repetition of these familiar items and the narrative, atmosphere or resonances which can be evoked by the considered choices of subject and composition. I work from a contemporary perspective rooted in the tradition of realistic still life painting. Painting directly from life I employ a representational style to evoke the qualities of the subject which first attracted my attention, without losing the physicality of oil paint on a flat surface. On leaving school I initially studied for a Chemistry degree before having my two children. Despite having drawn and painted all my life it was only while bringing the children up that I found the flexibility to develop further artistically. I initially studied with the Open College of the Arts and was eventually able to study for a Fine Art degree with De Montfort University as a ‘mature student’, graduating in 2002 with First Class Hons. During this time I also worked part-time as a picture researcher. I now paint full-time, working from my country studio.
