North Cornish bay
Original oil painting on canvas
North Cornish bay is an original oil painting by Christo Sharpe. Christo was staying near Padstow when he took a long walk westwards and ended up watching the rolling waves crash onto the rocky shore. It was dramatic and beautiful. This painting attempts to capture the sheer drama of the occasion. There is no doubt that being there is impressive and it is hard to portray the effect not just of the waves but the country that surrounds the centre of the action.
Clear, bold and confident, Christo Sharpe is a lifelong painter who closes in on a subject to pull your attention to the colours, shapes and details in front of him. His strong colours and compositions are delightfully simple and appealing. After Southampton College of Art and a 20 year career as an art director in advertising he is now focussing exclusively on his art. He is an enthusiastic walker and it is often on these walks that his subjects reveal themselves. It is not always the classic views that appeal it is just as often a gnarled tree trunk, a woodland scene or a garden that holds his attention. If he can take the subject in front of him and encourage the viewer to see something new and exciting in that image, then he has achieved what he wants in his art. To generate an awareness that might otherwise be missing. This is work that looks and feels fresh.
