  • About this work of Art

    Clova Stuart-Hamilton.

‘Sunflowers’ is painted on sized, brown linen flax in the medium of distemper or ‘peinture a la colle’ a mixture of an organic glue size and pure ground pigment which gives it a soft, matt radiance. Although an unusual medium today it was used extensively by the French painter Edouard Vuillard and examples be seen in many museums and galleries.
The Provencal Fabrics, sunflowers and Sienese jugs lend the painting a Southern European feel and the endless variations of circular and oval shapes and subtle harmonies of blues and yellows give it an authority and sophistication.

It has a substantial bespoke wooden frame, with a moulded profile, hand finished with gesso to complement the soft grey greens in the painting. The framed size is 25.5″x 29.5″.
