Clova Stuart-Hamilton.
The Yellow Still life. Light pouring through a kitchen window highlighted a chance grouping of utensils and flowers in differing shades of yellow and green. The white-washed walls and neutral colour of the stone, wood and tile permit a lively interplay between the brighter colours. The strong verticals and horizontals of the window and cupboard lock the smaller elements of the composition in place.
Another in the series of French Interior and Interior/Still life paintings. The painting references the Cubists with the inclusion of a ‘Cubist Tray’ a lemon, the iconic French drinking bowl, a French newspaper and an olive oil bottle.

The picture has an acid free double mount and handmade, hand finished wood frame with a flat profile. The framed size is 17″x19″.

Size: H:24.13 cm x W:29.21 cm

Clova Stuart-Hamilton. Artist Clova Stuart-Hamilton sells her works online and through our art gallery Wychwood Art in Deddington. Clova Stuart-Hamilton trained at the Ruskin and the Royal Academy Schools in the 1980s, winning a number of major prizes and scholarships. She has shown extensively in London: Sue Rankin Gallery, Cadogan Contemporary, Burlington Fine Art and the Mall Galleries (NEAC and RBA Open) and in Oxford, where she has found many collectors. Shows in East Anglia, the Southern counties and Edinburgh have taken her work further afield in the UK; whilst overseas she has found buyers in the US, Hong Kong and most recently in France where she has started to exhibit. Always working from life, her commitment to drawing and intense scrutiny of the subject can be traced back to her rigorous training and, in particular, to the teaching of the painter, Jane Dowling. Although most visible in the searching pencil drawings and the rhythmic and assertive oil pastels, the primacy of drawing underpins all the painted work. Her paintings probe worlds of unusual and distinctive colour harmonies; whether muted and subtle as in the French interiors or rich and sensuous as in her Exotic Still life subjects or flower pieces, as she responds to a particular stimulus and mood. Many of her works are sections of interiors or views from windows in her houses in Oxford or France. Sometimes her motif is a fusion of interior and still life, reflecting an admiration for the French painters, Chardin, Cezanne, Bonnard and Vuillard, and the Scottish artist Anne Redpath. An unapologetically figurative painter, the artist Jane Dowling wrote in the introduction to her first show at the Cadogan Contemporary in London: "Clova Stuart-Hamilton, unswayed by trends, paints what she sees. Relishing intricacy and profusion she deploys the myriad colour touches that coalesce on her canvas to create over and over again a triumphantly luminous web of form." Jeannine Alton, reviewing her show at Christ Church Picture Gallery wrote of her subjects being "domestic epiphanies transforming everday matter into symbols of pathos or glory." If labels have to be applied she would not be displeased with that of "Intimist". To discuss any of Clova Stuart-Hamilton art works please contact or call 07799 535765.
