About this work of Art
Virginia Ray Top Road 125x155x 5.5cm framed
Oils and mixed media on canvas. Original, affordable, atmospheric landscape oil painting.
Top Road references the landscape of Nidderdale, North Yorkshire.
Texture is achieved through the use of stone dust as quarrying is at the centre of this landscape.
My Uncle still works with local stone and I collect up his stone dust referencing the long heritage of my own family being involved in stone. My great grandad worked as a stone mason at Castle Howard and after that at the Yorke Estate in Bewerley, Pateley Bridge.
Cyclists have long sought the challenges Nidderdale has offered and an old family postcard of early 20th century cyclists is buried in the surface of this painting as a tribute to The Tour de Yorkshire Cycle race that passes through this area.
Cyclists, stone dust, marks and colours all serve to remind that this landscape is ever evolving and holds memory of past and present events and people.
