John Penney.
Venice Costume Drama- I love Venice, having visited it a few times now. It is such a unique ,magical, city . This painting is based on a real, but artistically dramatized, view of Piazza San Marco, that I have filled by my imagination with a host of traditionally costumed Carnival revellers – from a host of studies of the wonderful costumes done during Carnival time. I have tried to to portray Venice as a surreal fantastical stage set.

John Penney comments "I have been selling my paintings (and for many years also self designed and produced wooden furniture) for over 25 years, alongside a range of distinctly non-artistic full time jobs, from teaching to economic development . Now retired I can devote myself full time to being an artist. My paintings can be found in private collections throughout the UK , Europe and the USA.
I paint solely in acrylics, with a distinctive, hard-edged, representational, style - usually with a major figurative element - and an implied "narrative" for the viewer to imagine. Some of my paintings have a slightly surreal element to them , and many also have elements of humour too. Living in the beautiful " North Shropshire lakelands" , scattered with many lovely ice-age originated lakes or "meres" , I often use the picturesque and tranquil countryside around my home town of Ellesmere as subject and inspiration for my paintings. Other subjects often chosen for paintings are Venice, music and dance, and Blues /Jazz icons."
