During the Spring lockdown, I was absolutely captivated by Madeline Miller's book 'Circe' and found myself wanting to summon this canny little Greek Nymph to life, in my drawings.

I feel like I’m trying to pour out the way the movement makes me feel onto the paper at speed, before that essence escapes or my reaction becomes too rationalised. I know whether a drawing will work from the first few watery marks I make. I’m also in love with stories of ethereal and mythical beings; Gods, Nymphs and Arch-Angels, so my work is often figurative but sometimes just an abstract explosion of energy. Some of my figures have notably big bottoms and seem very proud of them. I use beautiful watercolour paper, my hands, quills, reed pens, ink and wash, wax, clay, graphite, collage, blingy gold mediums and sometimes a splash of cold tea or beetroot juice.” Emma was born in London and studied art at Wimbledon Art School, going on to do a BA in fine art and an MA in set design for film at Kingston University. Her career has been an eventful journey through over a decade as an art-director for the Film and TV industry, working in-house in creative agencies and now finally focussing on her first love, making fine art. Emma is now happily Brighton based and lives and works from her home in Kemptown. To discuss works by Emma de Polnay please contact deborah@wychwoodart.com, or call 07799 535765 / 01869 338155.
