Proud King is a limited edition bronze resin of a King Penguin by Jane Shaw.
In this bronze wildlife of a penguin, I decided to focus on King Penguins as they have such a distinct outline and I immediately was struck by the way they stand so proudly. The other characteristic I wanted to capture in this bronze sculpture was their huge feet, which almost tap like a school mistress waiting impatiently!
I was unable to visit the Falklands, and so had to pay a number of visits to our local zoo, to study these amazing creatures. Not such an interesting destination but the subject matter made up for it! They make multiple dives usually to a depth of over 100 metres, and will not immediately resurface, instead spending up to just shy of 10 minutes (although usually closer to 5 minutes) underwater on some dives, investigating the seabed for prey. They spend over 75% of their time in the water swimming about 4-8 miles per hour…so quite fast! Penguins are known as ‘flightless birds’ – and there are about 19 different species!
After completing a degree in History of Art at Manchester University, Jane spent her early career with a firm of Fine Art Valuers and Consultants travelling and living abroad before returning to London to set up and run a recruitment company, which she then sold after a decade. On moving to Dorset in 2013, she has revived her love for sculpture inspired by her life long interest in animals, and the outdoors. Jane is passionate about the portrayal of both animals and humans, and often working directly from life, focusing on movement and the overall essence of her subject. Jane continues on her own sculpture projects, producing work in both bronze and bronze resin and is now beginning to develop larger scale projects in plaster which are cast for the outdoors. In 2015 she was awarded First Prize for her sculpture of a Racing Greyhound at the Bath & West Show and then won the same award in 2016 for her sculpture of a Hare’s Head – ‘All Ears’.
