For a couple of years now I have been focussing back on nature and particularly the beauty of forests and woodland. This painting took inspiration from a walk on a very hot August day. The mercury was hitting the higher 30s and I found a bit of cooling relief from the beating sunshine in Rhinefield Ornamental Drive. This plantation has some truly gigantic redwoods, and I marvelled in the heavy scent of sweet sap as the world simmered. The painting is created using initial thin layers of acrylic coloured glazes followed by thicker areas of acrylic paint.

Born in Warwickshire in 1969, Andrew was surrounded by art from an early age; his mother a ceramicist and his father a well-respected London-based painter. Andrew studied at Bournville School of Art before graduating with a BA honours degree from Wimbledon School of Art in 1991, later winning a placement as a resident artist at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He has taken much inspiration from painters such as Edward Hopper, David Hockney and Giorgio Morandi and more recently the Pre Raphaelites with John Ruskin's drawings in particular. Andrew occasionally work plein air, but mostly it's back in the studio. He has no problems working from photography, and since the advent of all things digital finds the speed and ease of it's immediate reference invaluable in his practice. His work can be found in public and private collections in the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Japan and the Netherlands. He had appeared as a heat finalist in the Sky Arts programme Landscape Artist of The Year in 2018 and 2019. Andrew lives in the New Forest, Hampshire. He is a tutor to a small group of students and is a qualified picture framer (Fine Art Trade Guild Certified Framer).
