This painting started out as a more detailed depiction of evening light on fields with the downs in the background. As the light started failing my brushwork got more rapid as time was short. The result got more expressionistic and loose, whilst retaining the original colour scheme of blues and pinks. I love painting the bookends of the day, sunrise and sunset. There is so much drama that it can transform the most humble subject, even an empty field. The downs often form the background to my landscapes. The thin strip of pale violet in the distance or sometimes something more powerful and close up such as here. I grew up in Shropshire, Houseman country and his 'blue remembered hills' seem very familiar, hence the title of this painting.

Sam Travers artist with Wychwood Art. Sam comments "My primary interest is painting the English landscape and my surroundings. I have been working full time as an artist since 2017. I have exhibited in London and regional galleries and also exhibitions including the Royal West of England Academy and the Bath Society of Artists. I studied History of Art at UCL and Paper Conservation at Camberwell and went on to become a Specialist in 19th Century Paintings for Bonhams Auctioneers before turning to painting full time. I work in a studio I built just outside Holt near Bath. The majority of the paintings start as sketches done from life, and are then developed in the studio. There are figurative and abstract elements in my work, the tension between the two is at the heart of what I do. I have a huge respect for the traditional skills of draughtsmanship and use of colour and I am trying to marry these with a very personal approach to what and how I paint.
