A Rare Habitat is an original mixed media painting by Virginia Ray. This is an expressionistic painting inspired by Cley Marshes in North Norfolk.
Virginia Ray is interested in landscapes with an historical human intervention. Her process begins with observation and research and is developed with imagination and personal memories. Referencing family photographs and incorporating materials gathered from the land, Virginia seeks to create an interwoven layering of local history, identity, experience and memory. Her creative process is one of building layers, scratching, erasing and then rebuilding. Her multi layered surfaces of paint and mixed media, reference the landscape’s evolution in the memorable places she depicts. As Tacita Dean states, ‘Land is space in which the process of remembrance continues to activate the past.’ Virginia has a BA Hons in History and a MA in Fine Art from UCA Farnham. Virginia’s work has been exhibited in Surrey, Norfolk, London, Yorkshire and Ibiza. Virginia also works as a freelance artist with the Watts Gallery in Compton, Guildford.
