Charlotte Baxter is drawn to the natural world around her- Her work acknowledges the rhythms and cycles found in the natural world and the dynamic beauty found in the landscape. Capturing the spirit or essence of a place is particularly important to her as well as conveying a sense of movement and life in her work. Charlotte works primarily with lino and woodcut and the printmaking process itself greatly influences her work with each element bringing its own exciting opportunities. She uses a variety tools to cut away and reveal the image often working freehand to add texture and pattern using the natural chisel marks made by the tools to depict the forms she experiences in the landscape around her. In her most recent work Charlotte simplifies the landscape to its key elements, striving for balance in both colour and composition. The printed woodgrain forms an integral part of the image and her use of reclaimed local Ash for her blocks give a tangible connection to the landscape and is a reminder of the passing of time.
